Authentic learning with agentic AI
Today, you will be working within an authentic learning environment, which means you will be learning by engaging in tasks that mirror real-world situations.
This approach is based on the idea, introduced by John Seely Brown and others, that knowledge is best understood when it is tied to the activity, context, and culture in which it is used. Rather than simply receiving information, you will take part in a learning experience that involves collaboration, discussion, and reflection. As highlighted by Jan Herrington, Ron Oliver, and Diana Oblinger Lombardi, this means working with complex, sometimes ambiguous problems, thinking critically, and learning through doing, much like in real professional practice.
In this lesson, you will apply these ideas by interacting with AI-powered personas that represent historical figures. You will engage with Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray, asking them questions about their competing claims to the telephone patent. To guide your interactions, you will use a structured prompting approach called TRACI, helping you define the task, role, audience, format, and intent of your questions. Through this process, you will not only explore an important historical debate but also develop your ability to use AI critically and effectively, experiencing first-hand how agentic AI can support deeper, more authentic learning.
