December LAMS Conference Program Released

I'm pleased to announce the draft program is now available for the 4th International LAMS & Learning Design Conference in Sydney on December 4th, 2009 - see
http://lams2009sydney.lamsfoundation.org/program%20backup1.htm

The program covers topics such as LAMS in school, university and healthcare settings, students as designers (keynote), integrating LAMS with other e-learning systems and many other topics - I'm looking forward to yet another great conference and gathering of the LAMS flock!

To register for the conference, go to

LAMS Training Workshops before Conference

This year we'll have LAMS Training Workshops the day before the conference (December 3rd), which means that those new to LAMS can get a good understanding of the system before the main conference in the Beginner's workshop, and those with experience can hear about all the latest features in the Advanced workshop.

Having the Beginner's workshop before the conference is a great way to introduce teachers to LAMS for the first time followed by the more general conference the next day. Places are limited - details at

LAMS and SIF

SIF (the Systems Interoperability Framework) is a standard for integrating online systems that is widely used in school education. SIF is being adopted in Australia (and the USA, UK and elsewhere) to help foster seamless links between different educational systems. For more information on SIF, see http://www.sifinfo.org/us/index.asp

I'm pleased to announce that we'll soon be working on integrating LAMS and SIF - more details over the coming months. I'd be keen to hear from any LAMS users who are interested in SIF - please email me - james@melcoe.mq.edu.au

Second Journal Edition on LAMS

Earlier this year the journal "Teaching English with Technology" released a special edition on LAMS and Learning Design. Due to the great response to the initial call for papers, a second followup edition (Vol 9, Issue 3, Sep 2009) has now been released - see
http://www.iatefl.org.pl/call/callnl.htm

The articles in this edition include:
- "Promoting institutional change: Embedding Learning Design using LAMS in ESOL" by Lorna Burns and Simon Walker
- "Using LAMS chat and forum to promote quality conversations" by Leanne Cameron
- "LAMS as a cognitive tool for teacher education students’ reflective thinking" by Christine Dennis
- "Using LAMS to facilitate a ‘pedagogy-first’ approach to teaching Learning Design" by Matt Bower
- "Design of learning sequences for VET (Vocational Education and Training) community using LAMS. Experience from Leonardo da Vinci projects" by Erik Engh

My sincere thanks to Chris Alexander and Jarek Krajka and all the authors for this great achievement!

Update on LAMS Planner and Free Class Hosting

Earlier this year I mentioned our plans to provide access to a hosted version of the LAMS Planner, as well as an option for free hosting of a LAMS Class. We're getting close to finishing this work and hope to make it available before the end of the year. For those who would like the help us with initial testing before the big release, keep an eye on the LAMS Forums and future newsletters for details.
