5th International LAMS Conference in Sydney on December 9-10th

The 5th International LAMS and Learning Design conference will be held at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia on December 9th, 2010, with workshops on the 10th. For all details, please see
http://lams2010sydney.lamsfoundation.org/

The conference is directly after the ASCILITE conference, which is also in Sydney, so it will be easy to combine them into one trip.

The call for presentations/papers is now out - submissions are due by 10th of September - details at

LessonLAMS coming soon - no really!

I know I've been talking about LessonLAMS for some time now - the new hosted version of LAMS that allows teachers to get free accounts for a class of up to 30 students, but we're getting really close now....

We've developed a new "front end" interface for using LAMS to try to make things simpler for teachers who are new to LAMS. LessonLAMS also includes a link to the Activity Planner for easy to use templates, so it also should be of interest to experienced LAMS users too.

The site is up and running at http://www.lessonlams.com/ - but we're still fixing a few final issues with it (such as the image for sequences). We hope to have this complete in the next few weeks, but if you'd like to see how things are progressing, feel free to have a look now - we'd really welcome any feedback on the new interface.

LAMS Community "embed" feature

We have added an “embed” feature for LAMS sequences in the LAMS Community to allow you to embed an authoring view of a sequence directly into any webpage (eg, blog) - like the YouTube embed feature.

We hope this will make it easier for teachers to illustrate good teaching ideas using real teaching examples. The embed function allows immediate access (no login) to Learner Preview, and access to full Author view (including editing) via LessonLAMS.

Like LessonLAMS, this feature is not quite finished (same image issue to fix!), but is functioning if you want to try it - look out for the "Embed" button on LAMS Community sequences. Many thanks to the Open University UK who have helped support this development (with JISC assistance).

e-Adventure Presentation

In my last newsletter I mentioned the e-Adventure game platform, and its integration with LAMS. Angel Del Blanco from UCM, Spain is leading the work on this project, and is currently visiting us at MELCOE in Australia.

Angel just gave a presentation on his work and I was very impressed - I look forward to having it integrated with LAMS. To view his presentation, see

WCC conference 2010

The World Computer Congress is being held in Brisbane, Australia on September 20-23rd. It has many speakers from around the world across many topics in computing. As part of the "LearnIT" strand, I'll be giving an Invited presentation on the 20th. For more details, see

2010 European LAMS Conference followup

My apologies for the delay in sending out this newsletter, but this was because we had a great LAMS conference at Oxford University on July 15th, and we've been busy with preparation and then wrap-up from this event.

We'll be adding slides and audio from the presentations where possible over the coming month - see the Program area of the conference website.

Many thanks to Liz Masterman and colleagues at Oxford for their assistance with organising this great event. The CETIS DesignBash the following day was also great - you can see a record of the event in the OU's Cloudworks's tool at
