Linking Research and Teaching with LAMS

LAMS provides new opportunities for research into the teaching and learning process due to the structured nature of LAMS sequences and the rich records of student activity that LAMS creates.

As part of the LAMS@Macquarie Project, we recently ran a seminar for staff called "Linking Research and Teaching with LAMS". The seminar explored ways to take a scholarly approach to researching teaching, and how research into teaching can complement teaching itself.

In the first of two case studies, Associate Professor Peter Petocz from Statistics discussed the use of LAMS in his courses and his investigations of student understanding of statistics. In the second case study, Dr Paul Nesbitt from the Graduate School of Management discussed how LAMS provided an opportunity to reflect on what makes for a "learning organisation" using a technology (LAMS) as prompt for both the idea itself and the discussion of the idea (using Chat and Scribe). The seminar concluded with reflections from Associate Professor Anna Reid on ways to uncover research opportunities in many places, including day to day teaching.

The seminar provided great examples and advice for anyone considering how to bring research and teaching together using LAMS. For further details, see http://www.melcoe.mq.edu.au/projects/LAMS@MQ/whatson.htm#Seminars

LAMS V2.0 Welcome page and Administration

As part of the redevelopment of LAMS for Version 2, we're currently working on the starting page after login (the "Welcome" page), as well as the structure of organisations and classes in the Administration section. If you have any strong feelings about changes or improvements you'd like to these sections, now's the time to let us know! james@melcoe.mq.edu.au
