LAMS Conference Papers/Presentations due September 4th

A reminder that proposals for papers or presentations at the 4th International LAMS & Learning Design Conference are due this Friday, September 4th. We've had some great submissions already, and we look forward to further proposals on LAMS, Learning Design, Open Education or related topics. Proposal details available from
http://lams2009sydney.lamsfoundation.org/papers.htm

The conference will be held on December 4th at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, with training workshops on the 3rd. Registration is now open. Full details are available at the conference website - see

Upcoming New LAMS Feature: Inputs & Outputs

In my December 2008 LAMS conference keynote, I discussed the idea of "Inputs and Outputs" where one LAMS tool could provide outputs of student data as an input for use in later tool.

For example, you could have a Q&A and then send the student answers (as "Outputs") to a LAMS Voting tool (as "Inputs") for students to vote on the best answers. This idea could apply to many tools, such as images uploaded to an Image Gallery (and then voted on by students), Forum postings and many others. In time we'll introduce more types of Inputs - not just voting.

And for those interested in AI Education, in time you'll be able to build an artificial intelligence engine integrated with LAMS to collect student outputs and process then to decide on Branches!

For now, we expect to include a first version of Inputs and Outputs in LAMS 2.4 (due late 2009), then expand this feature over time. For further discussion, see

LAMS V2.3.2 release

We've just released LAMS V2.3.2, which fixes some bugs, mostly with the Image Gallery tool. For details and downloads, see

Wookie Widget Server and LAMS

Scott Wilson and colleagues in the UK have been working on a fantastic project to manage "widgets" - small Web 2 applications, including collaborative tasks - called "Wookie". The Wookie project has recently been accepted into the Apache incubator program - congrats!

We've worked with Scott on a new "Wookie" tool for LAMS, which would allow a Wookie server to be integrated with a LAMS server, and as a result, get access to thousands of Widgets within LAMS. For an animation, see
http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/Wookie+Widgets

The LAMS Wookie tool should be an optional feature in LAMS 2.4. Further details at http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lamsdocs/lawook10

New LAMS sequences illustrating collaboration with other Projects

There are many people working on exciting integrations of LAMS with other projects/systems, or illustrating the work of their projects using LAMS. We can illustrate these collaborations in action with a specially designed LAMS Community sequence.

Two recent examples arising from the 2009 European LAMS Conference are:

(1) Generative Learning Objects Maker (GLO Maker) from Tom Boyle and colleagues at the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Reusable Learning Objects. For a sequence illustrating GLO in LAMS, see
http://www.lamscommunity.org/lamscentral/sequence?seq%5fid=816223
And for details of how the integration was done, see
http://wiki.lamsfoundation.org/display/lams/GLO+Learning+Objects

(2) Design Principles Database (DPD) from Yael Kali and colleagues. At the CETIS Design Bash, Yael and I worked on the example "Whole-class collaboratively constructed Wiki table" - we took the text information in the DPD - see:
http://www.edu-design-principles.org/dp/viewFeatureDetail.php?feKey=515&summary=true
And converted it into a LAMS sequence, see
http://www.lamscommunity.org/lamscentral/sequence?seq%5fid=814909

If there are other Projects working with LAMS and have examples to share, please let me know! james@melcoe.mq.edu.au
