2009 European LAMS & Learning Design Conference

Despite the global financial crisis, travel restrictions and swine flu, we had another great European LAMS conference. My thanks to all who presented, and a special thanks to GrĂ¡inne Conole, Janet Dyson and colleagues at the Open University UK for hosting the event and all their help with co-ordinating a conference from opposite sides of the planet! Slides and audio for presentations will go up on the conference program page in the near future.

One of the great recent contributions from the OU is their work on Cloudworks, a social networking site for sharing good teaching and learning ideas. For lots of ideas arising from the conference, see
http://cloudworks.open.ac.uk/index.php/cloudscape/view/1862

We had a CETIS Design Bash to accompany the conference where we shared ideas and examples of Learning Designs. Sheila MacNeill, who helped co-ordinate the day, has posted a summary on her blog at

LAMS Schools Showcase

It's been a busy time for conferences! Since my last newsletter we also had a great Showcase of LAMS use in schools in Australia - we'll add slides to the showcase website in the near future.

One of the highlights of this event for me was a presentation from colleagues at the Macquarie ICT Innovation Centre about student authoring of LAMS sequences for use in NSW DET schools. While students initially thought it would be easy to use LAMS to create lessons, they found the process challenging as they started to think through how to foster learning among their peers. By the end of the experience, the students were saying that they felt they had learned their topic deeply, understood that teaching was hard, and developed a new respect for their teachers!! I can't imagine better learning outcomes for any innovation - technology or otherwise! We hope to have more on this amazing project at the 4th International LAMS Conference in December.

Special TEwT Journal Education on LAMS - Volume 1 out

My thanks to Chris Alexander for co-ordinating the publication of a Special Edition on LAMS and Learning Design (Vol 9, Issue 2) for the Journal "Teaching English with Technology" (ISSN 1642-1027). Links to the articles are available at http://www.iatefl.org.pl/call/callnl35.htm

Because there were more articles than space in a single volume, a second volume will be released later this year - I'll provide details when I have them.

16 new sequences from Maria Kordaki

Maria Kordaki and colleagues from Greece have developed a suite of 16 templates to illustrate many common teaching techniques in LAMS. Each LAMS Community example has a description of the teaching method (see accompanying file), and a blank sequence (but with the appropriate structure of activities) ready to be adapted to your chosen topic. These are available in the Public sequence repository. For example, "Planning collaboration using the "Team Expectations" method within LAMS" is available at
http://www.lamscommunity.org/lamscentral/sequence?seq_id=820805

LAMS Community Statistics - 10,000 downloads!

Since we added the preview feature, I've been reporting previews and downloads combined, but as we've just hit 10,000 downloads, I thought this was worth mentioning. Here are the LAMS Community statistics as at 3rd of August 2009:
Users: 4622
Number of Sequences: 456
Sequences downloaded: 10049 times
Sequences Previewed: 3149 times
Forum Postings: 4831
